We all want to look great for our age, right? And, let's admit it, we all have a beauty budget to work within. In many cases, a single syringe of dermal filler can give you just the amount of definition or volume you're looking for, especially if you're younger. But, the truth is, to truly achieve the results you're looking for, you may need multiple syringes of filler. The idea of 3, 6 or even 8 syringes of filler may sound excessive, but when you understand how certain fillers work together and the benefits of treating to full correction in one appointment, you may decide that budgeting for more is a better investment than getting by with the bare minimum of what you think you need.
"I pride myself in making the world of cosmetic injectables accessible and affordable to my patients," says Katie McClellan PA-C, the owner of Infinite Youth Medical Spa. "There's no denying that treatments like Restylane® and Voluma® don't come cheap, but quite simply, they work! It's a far better investment over time to fine-tune and tweak aging skin with products like these that are proven to be effective than it is to fill your medicine cabinet with creams and lotions that don't make a difference. The key is to start with a strategy that addresses what your face needs when it needs it and to evolve that plan with a qualified provider as you age to ensure your results look natural throughout the years."
How much filler is actually IN a syringe of filler?
Although the size of the molecules and the way they are linked together may vary from filler to filler, many patients are surprised to discover how little product is actually in each syringe of filler. This does NOT mean that a patient isn't getting their "money's worth" from the product; it merely illustrates how much product you may actually need to correct a deep fold or wrinkle completely.
"Many of my patients are taken aback when I am honest with them about the number of syringes they may need to address their concerns in one treatment," shares Katie. "This is especially true if someone wants to treat cheeks, under eyes, and lips all in one appointment," she continues. "It's important to realize that it would take an extreme amount of filler to make you look overdone if you are addressing multiple treatment areas."
How do I know how many syringes of filler I will need?
That comes down to your beauty goals and the recommendations of your provider. If you are looking to accentuate an aspect of your features like your lips, that may only require one syringe. On the other hand, if you're looking for a more moderate to significant change in an area like your mid-face or jawline, multiple syringes may be indicated. Also, Botox or Dysport may be suggested to enhance and extend your results from filler.
What are the benefits of treating to a "full correction" during one appointment with multiple syringes of filler?
"I know it's really tempting to just budget for one syringe of filler at a time and keep coming back, but you may never realize your result's full potential by treating that way," explains Katie. "Fillers aren't just about volume; they can also provide structure and lift. The nasolabial folds, or the lines that run from the corners of your nose to the corners of your mouth, are a great example of this. You may think that all you need smooth to these lines is one syringe of filler split between both sides of the face, but you have to look at where the lines are coming from. When we lose volume and support in our cheeks due to collagen and fat loss, the lower face begins to fall. Most clients get a much more balanced and lifted result to smoothing their nasolabial lines by ALSO putting a product like Voluma® in their cheekbones during the same appointment. The Voluma acts like scaffolding to lift the midface and lessen the appearance of the nasolabial folds. These full results would never be realized by someone who just has one syringe injected into the corners of their mouth and hopes for a complete transformation."
Another benefit of having multiple areas treated at once with multiple syringes of filler is that you can stay on schedule. That means instead of coming back every three to six months to attempt to layer your results and play catch up, you can enjoy full correction throughout the year and focus on quarterly treatments with Botox® or Dysport.
"It isn't the goal of any injector to make you look over-filled or over-done," says Katie. "But it IS my goal to deliver the most natural-looking results that get you closer to your goal. Multiple syringes of filler often allow me to achieve true harmony within your facial features in one treatment, as opposed to trying to decipher which area requires the most attention at each of your visits. Although not everyone needs or qualifies for this approach, it's smarter and frequently, a more economical way to approach facial rejuvenation throughout the year!"
