Dermal fillers help to diminish facial wrinkle lines and restore volume and fullness in the face and or hands. Dermal fillers can also be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery.
As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat volume. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow's feet become more apparent. The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. So dermal fillers play a key role in a younger more youthful appearance. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle.
Dermal fillers can be used to:
Plump thin lips
Enhance shallow contours
Soften facial creases and wrinkles
Improve the appearance of recessed scars
What to Expect During the Dermal Filler Procedure
An injection of filler takes about 30-45 minutes depending on location and the amount of syringes needed. Each syringe is 1-2 milliliters which is approximately 1/5 of a tea.oon so many times patients will need more than one syringe depending on the desired outcome. Each syringe has lidocaine in it for added comfort during the treatment and the skin is usually iced prior to injection to minimize discomfort. Overall the procedure is very tolerable.
What to Expect After the Dermal Filler Procedure
There is some swelling and chance of a bruise occurring after an injection with dermal filler. Usually the swelling and or bruising lasts anywhere from 3-5 days and possibly up to 2 weeks. There will also be some tenderness associated in the area where the injections were placed for a few days. There will be instant results after the procedure but final results are usually a week or two later. Dermal fillers will usually last anywhere between 1-5 years depending on the type of filler chosen and will slowly break down over that time period. To minimize swelling and bruising, it is recommended to ice the area, sleep elevated at night and Arnica Montana, a herbal supplement, can be used to shorten the life of a bruise if present. It is also recommended not to exercise the day of dermal filler injections. Makeup may be worn after injections and a patient’s regular skincare routine is acceptable.
Dermal Filler Types
There are various types of dermal fillers on the market. The following are examples of common fillers used to diminish facial lines and restore volume.
Restylane®, Restylane Lyft®, Restylane Silk®, Restylane Refine®, and Restylane Define® are a group of safe and natural cosmetic dermal fillers used to correct moderate to severe wrinkles, folds, and hollows. Fillers in this group are made for specific areas of the face. These injectables are made of hyaluronic acid – a natural substance that already exists in the human body that delivers nutrients, hydrates, and cushions the skin. These fillers may also be reversed if needed. They are great for areas such as temples, tear trough (lower lid), upper eyelids, cheeks, nasolabial folds, lips, and jowls. The Restylane group of filler lasts up to 1 year.
Juvederm Ultra®, Juvederm Ultra Plus®, Vollure®, Voluma®, and Volbella® are a group of safe dermal fillers that are also made of hyaluronic acid; which is a building block of our skin. Fillers in this group are created for certain areas of the face. Juvederm Ultra is great for plumping thin lips, Juvederm Ultra Plus is great for oral commisures, nasolabial folds, marionette folds, Voluma is great to lift the cheek area and add volume, and Volbella is great for fine lines such as liplines, smile creases, under eye, and lip smoothing. All of these fillers can be reversible if needed. They all last approximately 12 months. Vollure can last up to 18 months and Voluma can last up to 2 years.
Radiesse® is a safe, FDA-approved dermal filler made of unique calcium-based microspheres suspended in a natural gel. It is a volumous filler that is non-reversible and lasts about 12-15 months. It is great for cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines (sides of the mouth), jowls, and back of hands.
Bellafill® uses an innovative blend of 2 distinct components to create results that are both immediate and long lasting. Suspended within its smooth collagen gel are tiny polumethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. Once its injected, the collagen goes to work immediately, adding natural-looking volume to soften nasolabial folds or marionette lines, add volumize cheeks, temples, or acne scars. Over time, your body naturally metabolizes the collagen- but that doesn’t mean your results disappear. The PMMA microspheres work as a scaffolding system, supporting the development of your own collagen and laying the foundation for long-term smoothness. Most patients need 2-5 syringes to achieve results, sometimes more. A 5 year study conducted with Bellafill show patients still 83% satisfied with their initial treatment of Bellafill.
