Tune Up Tired Looking Eyes with Dermal Filler
They say that our eyes are the windows to our souls. But, what if you only see hallowed out, tired and wrinkled eyes staring back at you when you look in the mirror? The truth is, our eyes are the focal point of our face. We can express ourselves with our eyes and communicate our mood and emotions without even saying a word. Although our eyes hold so much power, they are incredibly vulnerable to damage and premature aging. At one time, surgical blepharoplasty was the only option to restore a more youthful looking eye area, but now, dermal fillers under eye fillers have changed the game on how we can turn back the clock on orbital aging.
“Our eyes are of the most captivating and telling features of our faces, but they are also incredibly vulnerable to aging from environmental and lifestyle factors,” says injection specialist, Katie McClellan PA-C. “I often see patients who complain of a gaunt, hallowed out under eye area that is making them look years older than they feel,” she continues. “It’s not uncommon to see this in patients as young as their mid to late twenties when there is a genetic component to how their eye area ages.”
Common signs of aging in the under-eye area include sagging, puffiness, drooping, loss of elasticity, dark circle and the descension of fat pads that can lead to a hollowed-out look. These changes are due to the gradual breakdown of collagen and elastin as we age, changes to underlying fat, bone loss and a decrease of healthy circulation under the eye area.
“Dermal fillers like Restylane® have completely changed how I treat my patients’ under eye concerns,” explains Katie. “Years ago, I would simply refer these patients to a facial plastic surgeon, but now I can safely restore the volume and smoothness to this area for many of my patients and omit the need for surgery for years to come!”
Although dermal fillers are commonly associated with plumping lips, lifting cheekbones and filling deep lines and wrinkles on the face, they are making a significant impact on how medical aesthetics professionals restore a more youthful look to their patients’ eyes. Being soft and plump in its consistency, the dermal filler, Restylane, is considered the industry’s gold-standard for this treatment because of its smooth and natural looking results.
“I know that having a needle close to your eye is always a little bit daunting at first, but the procedure is far more comfortable than most people anticipate,” smiles Katie. “We first apply numbing cream to you under eye area and may even incorporate some ice to cut down on any discomfort, plus many fillers have numbing agents within them,” she explains. “I use a very small needle to gently restore volume to hollowed out areas and replace lost lift and smoothness,” she continues. “Your results are immediate, which is super gratifying, especially if you have been bothered by the appearance of this area for a long time!”
Because the under-eye area is so vascular and delicate, it can be more prone to slight swelling and bruising. Swelling will subside within three days or less, and any bruising can easily be covered with makeup concealer. It is advisable to not schedule this treatment immediately before a special event until you know how your skin responds. Expect your results to last anywhere from 6 months to a full year with Restylane. These results can be prolonged and enhanced with treatments like BOTOX® or Dysport® around your eye area.
“I love performing under eye dermal filler treatments because it has such a large impact on your appearance with such a minimal effort,” says Katie. “My patients will comment how they feel like they look like themselves again,” she continues. “It’s so rewarding to see them leave the clinic immediately looking more refreshed, rested and youthful!”
