SkinPen Microneedling

Improve your skin's texture and tone with SkinPen® – the gold standard in medical microneedling. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling effectively smooths fine lines and wrinkles, softens acne scarring, reduces pore size, tightens skin, and even improves the appearance of stretch marks with little to no downtime!

What is SkinPen® Microneedling and how do they work?

SkinPen® is a medical-grade, state-of-the-art, pen-shaped device that is only available to licensed skincare professionals. The disposable tip of SkinPen® is made of 14 surgical-grade stainless steel needles, which are very small and fine. These needles create a latticework of uniform, controlled micro injuries to your skin to stimulate collagen production and smooth the skin's surface as it heals.

During a SkinPen® treatment, your provider will first apply topical numbing to the treatment area. She will then move the pen across your skin as the needles vibrate to create hundreds of microscopic channels into the dermis. These minor, controlled injuries encourage your skin to begin a healing cycle that boosts collagen and elastin production, two components of our skin that enhance its volume and smoothness. As the skin heals, it becomes firmer, smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking.

SkinPen® can be used to treat the following skin concerns on the face and body:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne scarring
  • Scar revision (scars must be over one year old)
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Stretch marks (stretch marks must be over one year old)
  • Dull, devitalized skin
  • Crepey skin texture
  • Sun damage
  • Aging skin

Who is a good candidate for SkinPen® Microneedling?

SkinPen® Microneedling is appropriate for all skin types and skin colors. The depth of your treatment can be adjusted by your provider and customized to treat your specific skin concern. If you want smoother and tighter skin but wish to avoid the extended downtime of treatments like laser resurfacing, SkinPen® is a fantastic option!

SkinPen® Microneedling treatments are contraindicated for patients with the following conditions:

  • History of keloid scars
  • Scleroderma
  • Collagen vascular disease or cardiac abnormalities
  • Hemorrhagic disorders or hemostatic dysfunction
  • Active bacterial or fungal infections

Your provider will also take precautions if you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic, immunosuppressive therapy, or diagnosed with any wound healing deficiency.

How much does SkinPen® Microneedling cost?

An average SkinPen® Microneedling treatment for the full face and neck costs $350. Patients may add in other areas for additional cost. There are package discounts available for more extensive treatment areas such as the upper back or arms.

How long until I see results with SkinPen® Microneedling?

Although most people notice an immediate glow and vibrancy to their skin the days and weeks following their SkinPen® Microneedling treatment, it will take time to see the final smoothing effects. This is because your body's collagen remodeling process takes place over a series of months. With each passing week after your SkinPen® treatment, expect your skin to appear smoother, tighter, and brighter. Your skin's appearance will continue to improve for up to six months after your last SkinPen® treatment. A series of three to six treatments with annual maintenance is recommended for optimal results, especially if your goal is to improve acne scarring.

How do I care for my skin before and after SkinPen® Microneedling?

The healthier your skin is coming into your SkinPen® Microneedling treatment, the better your outcome will be. If you are not currently on a customized professional skincare line, our staff can help select the appropriate products for you.

Before your SkinPen® Microneedling treatment:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for at least a week before your treatment and avoid tanning beds and sunburn
  • Avoid waxing your face (brows, lip, chin) for at least a week before your treatment
  • Avoid scheduling Botox®, Dysport®, or dermal fillers for two weeks before your treatment
  • Avoid scheduling facial surgery of any kind for at least three months before your treatment
  • Avoid the use of retinol in your skincare for at least three days before your treatment

Immediately after your SkinPen® treatment, your skin will be slightly flushed. As the topical numbing wears off, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned or windburned. However, redness generally subsides within 24 hours, and you can wear makeup the day after your treatment.

Your skin may feel dry and tight for the first few days after treatment. You may also experience some light flaking. It is essential to follow the skincare and sun protection guidelines given to you by your provider. Schedule your SkinPen® treatment at least two weeks before any special event.

After your SkinPen® Microneedling treatment:

  • Only use the skincare recommended to you by your provider for the first week after your treatment
  • Avoid SPF for the first four hours after your treatment
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 7-14 days after treatment
  • Avoid waxing and laser hair removal for 7-14 days
  • Avoid any facials or facial laser treatments for at least two weeks
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas – anything that will elevate your body temperature for the first day after treatment
  • Avoid exfoliating products for at least three days after your treatment, and do not pick at your skin
  • Increase your water intake to quicken your healing time
  • Wearing a physical SPF is mandatory after your treatment to protect your skin
